Asian Butterfly

FRIDAY, JUNE 22, 2018     10:30 - 4:30     $57 plus $35 kit fee (paid in class)

Come play with Susan to create this stunning Asian Butterfly (designed by Susan Carlson). You can use some of your favorite scraps with traditional Asian fabrics, batiks and specialty fabrics.

We will use a technique that makes construction simple using raw edge applique, Mylar placing templates and "Steam-A-Seam 2." Susan’s basic design makes it easy to customize and embellish. Bring beads, threads, floss, metallic thread and paint to enhance your masterpiece.

Your teacher will include a discussion of choosing colors you love, evolving your own personal style, and how to continue your lifelong learning in fabric. She will bring books for inspiration. Bring fabric to share (optional). You are welcome to pick selections from her personal stash to complement your own.

Suggestion for fabric choice: Look for jewel tones and small prints. Don’t worry about choosing a background fabric, until your butterfly is almost complete. Refer to materials list. Your teacher is looking forward to spending the day with you!!!

Supplies Needed

Notions and other supplies:

Machine & Accessories

We will use the sewing machine the last 2 hours of class. If you prefer to spend the class time designing the butterfly, and save the sewing for home, that is also fine.

Fabric Recommendations:

There is no need to pre-wash fabrics.

Batiks and tone on tone fabric (different shades of one color in the same fabric). Bring less than 1/8 yard pieces unless otherwise stated, as you only use a small amount. A large number of different fabrics are more interesting. Small prints are more effective than large prints to suggest perspective.

At least 4 small patterned Asian prints. Pick a color scheme and have all fabrics complement each other.

I love hand dyed fabrics and use them in most of my quilts. Try to pick your color scheme before selecting fabric, it will make finding fabric or choosing fabric from your stash MUCH EASIER!!!!

For instance, select one of the following color combinations or make up your own.

Primary Colors: White and Green with Purple accents

Primary Colors: Purple and White with Orange accents

Primary Colors: Yellow Orange and Lime Green with Blue-Violet accents

Primary Colors: Turquoise Blue and White with Orange accents.

The fabric can be solid colors, tone on tone, and batiks where the fabric contains many shades of one color, or highlights many colors in one overall color. Also look at accent prints in the oriental selections, and in your own scrap box, Fabric printed with Leaves and bushes (small scale). Cut up florals and leaf prints can give you great detail. Geometric patterns work well for this quilt as well. Remember to buy the fabric you love, and you will love your finished quilt!!!

White netting or multiple overlays of transparent netting and silks.

Be sure to pick light to dark values, to make it “pop”

Yards and threads of various weights. You can incorporate heavier threads using your bobbin.

When you have finished the butterfly, select the border and binding fabrics.

For final embellishment you can sew or glue beads for eyes and antenna. Free hand or machine embroidery also works well. Fabric paints and metal colored fabric “beads” are great additions, too.
